Coconut tree hill in Mirissa is one of the most Instagramable places in Sri Lanka. On this beautiful hill, palm trees rise from a red cliff surrounded by the Indian Ocean. It’s a perfect spot to watch sunset or sunrise and listen to the sound of waves.
How to get to Coconut tree hill Mirissa?
For me, it was fairly easy to follow directions from Google Maps. We searched for Coconut tree hill and asked our tuk-tuk driver to stop in front of Jeremy Backpacker Hostel. From there, we followed Beach Road until we got to the cliff. It was effortless to spot and less complicated than finding the rope swing beach location.

The other way to get to Coconut tree hill Mirissa is walking from the beach side. If you start in Mirissa town, you need to walk Parrot Rock and 2 more bays until you find the hill.
The path leading up to the top of the hill is steep and I suggest putting sneakers to avoid any contusions.

When to visit
The first time, I ventured to coconut tree hill in Mirissa, it was around the time sun gets down and wow… it was a crowd! Usually, when it comes to sunset everyone has a similar idea of watching it in an epic place. That being said, if you are not a photo freak who wants to photograph empty locations, sunset is undoubtedly beautiful!
I have seen some of the most beautiful sunsets in my life in the south of Sri Lanka. Picture magical pink tones, golden clouds, and sun that goes down straight to the ocean.
If you are a photography freak, I suggest going early in the morning and catching first rays of sun. The light will still be very soft and with gold tones.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have any free morning left in Sri Lanka, and to be honest, we thought we would be able to capture the location at sunset. That’s why we decided to come back in the late morning the next day, just after snorkeling with turtles. Luckily there was no one around and we were able to take the picture we wanted.

In case of a monsoon period, wet season starts in April and runs till September in the south coast of Sri Lanka. I suggest visiting between December and March. In fact, we visited in February and the weather was just perfect!

What else to do in Mirissa?

The South Coast of Sri Lanka has tons of exciting places to see. I highly suggest visiting Parrot Rock and Mirissa Secret Beach. If you love animal encounters, you can go snorkeling with green sea turtles that are common on this coast.

Also, worth mentioning is my absolutely favorite spot: Unawatuna Frog Rock and Dalawella Beach Swing. It is not exactly in Mirissa but not a far drive away. Also, check this blog post to see all the beautiful locations I visited during my 3 week trip to Sri Lanka.
